One Day in Niteroi 15/08/2009

For us exchange students the extended school holiday is not appreciated. We don´t have any local friends to be with, and those exchange students who don´t have a brother or sister will have a boring time. Therefore, we decided to spend a day together in Niteroi, alone; adventuring.

Michiel, an exchange student from Belgium, who temporary lives in Niteroi planned the day together with a guy from AFS. The group consisted of me, Sanne from Belgium, Tobias from Germany, and Michiel, who picked us up at the boat station in Niteroi. The watch showed 11:00am and off we went with the bus towards the MAC Museum - a bumpy ride.

The MAC Museum was not hard to recognize. The shape of an UFO adorned a ledge of the hill we were walking on in front of us, whilst we on the right side had the beautiful bay in front of Rio de Janeiro. It was worth many pictures.

We entered the museum which was surprisingly small; it was spartanic furnished with wide, bright walls, and there wasn´t much to see - the entry price of only 4 Reais (approximately 1.3 Euros, pronounced heaish) reflected that. But we had a nice time, trying interacting with the art!

After the museum we got hungry, so we walked along the beach 3 kilometers in dying hot weather. I´m glad Sanne and Tobias brought sun lotion. We entered a small supermarket buying some baguettes, some ham, and a little cheese, then we visited a small square nearby, sat down, and ate until we got satisfied.

The next stop was A Vista do Parque da Cidade, so again we caught a bus, drove some time, and jumped off. At the start of our trip we planned to walk to the top of the hill, where the park was located, but because we already was exhausted because of the sun, we took a taxi. Thank God for that; the hill was very steep. We drove through various plants, many beautiful, before we reached the top; the forests in the area in and around Rio de Janeiro is said to have the most bio diversity on earth.

The vision from the top was beautiful. We had a clear sight of the whole bay, and we could as well see Botafogo, Flamingo, and Urca (city areas), and Cobacabana beach. It is worth explaining, but my vocabulary isn´t imaginable near it; experience the pictures instead.

After the sight we decided to walk down. We followed a road through the forest, so it was a little adventure. Safe down, we took the bus for the second last time towards an oceanic beach. It was a long bus ride, 00:45 minutes, but we had fun! We arrived and walked to the beach. It was nice to see a beach without that many people - Ipanema Beach is like a ant-hill compared to it. The three of us, exept Sanne, swum a bit, but then the waves got to high, so the lifeguards helped us up; I see why it is called Surfer´s Beach.

We took the bus home nearly sleeping. The day ended at 07:00pm at Niteroi´s  boat station. I have uploaded some photos from the day to the gallery One Day in Niteroi. It was a good day. A fun day.
